I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced

Nujood Ali is from Yemen and was married at the age of 10. Her father arranged for her marriage to a man three times her age. After she is abused both physically and sexually, she manages to escape and make it to the "court" where she seeks a divorce. She is the first child bride to be granted a divorce in Yeman and was named a Glamour Woman of the Year in 2008.

Why I picked it up: I was intrigued by both the title and the picture of this beautiful, young girl on the cover.

Why I finished it: It is an easy read and I wanted to know if she lives "happily ever after."

I'd give it to: Those who read biographies and enjoy reading about other cultures.

  1. This is the story of a brave little Yemen girl who stood up for herself and got a divorce from her abusive husband. I hope that in fifteen or twenty years we'll see that she really did become a lawyer and she's making sure women in that part of the world get the protection and equal rights that they deserve.
