Scott Bolzan slipped and fell in his office bathroom on Dec. 17, 2008 and suffered one of the worst cases of permanent retrograde amnesia on record. He had no memory of anything before his fall...no memory of his family (a wife, daughter and son), no memory of being a pilot or his aviation business and in some cases, no memory of the meaning of words. Scott and Joan (his wife) share their journey with honesty and humor. One of the ways that Scott "relearns" things is by watching TV...in particular, The Sopranos. He suffers from debilitating headaches. She has to adjust to the role reversal when she must find a job to support the family. She also must reintroduce herself to him as he has no memory of their 24 years of marriage.

Thunder Dog

Michael Hingson is a survivor of 9/11 and his story is even more miraculous because he is blind. He and his guide dog, Roselle, navigated their way down from the 78th floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center. Interspersed in the book is some of Michael's story leading up to 9/11 as well as what happened that day. If you love animal stories, you will like the book. If you like reading about 9/11, you will like the book. If you wish to learn more about guide dogs, you will enjoy the book.

Child trafficking...a subject that makes all of us uncomfortable, I'm sure. Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal tells the story of Conor Grennan and his quest to find the homes of the children from an orphanage in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. This story is both heart-breaking and uplifting. One cannot help but love the children and hope that Conor will succeed in his mission. Want to find out how it ends? Well, I suggest you read the book. :-)

Why I picked it up: Because we have so Nepalese students, I thought I might learn a bit more about their culture.

Why I finished it: The resilience of the children drew me in and I really wanted to see if they were able to be reunited with their families.

I'd give it to: My niece who has such a soft heart and would immediately want to fly to Nepal and bring all those children home.

Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled trains capuchin monkeys for people living with spinal cord injury or other mobility impairments.

Why I picked it up: I couldn't resist the picture of Kasey on the cover of the book.

Why I finished it: Ellen writes about everything that happened to them...the good, the bad and the ugly. I wanted to know how they got Kasey and how she became a part of their family...and it wasn't all easy.

I'd give it to: My niece who loves all animals and would delight to read Kasey's (and Ned's) story.

Why I picked it up: I have been on a kick of reading about urban homesteading, small scale farming, and simplifying by moving toward a less electronically connected way of life. And of course the picture of the barn on the cover.

Why I finished it: I checked this book out from our library, by page 42 I had fallen in love. By page 48 I ordered my own copy. I enjoyed reading about the love that develops between Kristin and her husband, and between Kristin and the farm. She wasn't afraid to share gritty, real details and tensions of learning new things.

I'd give it to: Anyone interested in "growing their own" & anyone looking for a love story.

Tin Ticket: the Heroic Journey of Australia's Convict Women

This book details the lives of four women from the British Isles convicted of petty crimes in the 19th century. Their crimes range from stealing a bucket of milk to pawning 11 spoons. Instead of being jailed, they are shipped to Australia where men outnumber women 9 to 1. They are issued "tin tickets" that have numbers stamped on them and are hung around their necks for their journey via ship. The conditions that they endure both on the ship and while they are in jail in Australia are horrific!

Why I picked it up: I have always been fascinated with Australia and hope to travel there someday.

Why I finished it: While this book is non-fiction, it reads more like a novel, so I really wanted to find out what happens to all four women.

I'd give it to: Any of my friends who also want to travel to Australia. :-)

Deadliest Sea

On March 23, 2008 the Alaska Ranger (a fishing trawler) began taking on water in the Bering Sea. After placing calls for help, the crew of 47 would eventually abandon ship to the frigid water. Many knew if they weren't rescued soon they would either drown or freeze to death. Two Coast Guard helicopters were dispatched to the scene to try to rescue them under less than ideal circumstances.

Why I picked it up: I know little about the Coast Guard and this branch of our military.

Why I finished it: I wanted to see who survives and the details of their rescue.

I'd give it to: There is ample description not only of the rescue, but also what goes on when a fishing boat sets sail for an expedition. So I'd give it to anyone who wants to know more about open sea fishing as an occupation as well as how the Coast Guard operates.

Six young men started a "club" in 1866 in Pulaski, Tennessee. This club came to be known as the Ku Klux Klan. At first they limited their actions to riding the countryside at night, crashing parties while wearing their ghostly ornate costumes. Soon they recruited more men and, modeling their club after a fraternity, had secret handshakes and passwords, initiation rituals and other secret rites. Their actions soon took a turn towards violence and former slaves were on the receiving end of threats, whippings, beatings and even lynchings. The book is filled with photos, illustrations and interviews.

Why I picked it up: I know little about the Ku Klux Klan and this seemed like a good way to find out about its origins.

Why I finished it: It was interesting to read about this time in our history.

I'd give it to: Anyone who doesn't know much about the Ku Klux Klan. The book is well-researched and is a fairly easy read.

The Poker Bride: the First Chinese in the West

This book is about the gold rush years in California and the Chinese immigrants that were so much a part of that time in history. There is much about Chinatown in San Francisco, the sex trade and the laws of the "hatchet men" (the Chinese version of the mob). Some of the book is about Polly, a Chinese concubine smuggled to San Francisco, who eventually is "lost" in a poker game and marries Charlie Bemis. I will admit that I was disappointed in how little of the book is actually about Polly...with its title I expected the book to be almost entirely about her and it isn't. Doesn't make it a bad book...just a deceiving title in my mind.

Why I picked it up: I will admit I found the title to be intriguing...deceiving, but intriguing!

Why I finished it: It was an interesting book and I did want to find out more about Polly and her life story.

I'd give it to: Anyone interested in history...especial the Gold Rush days.

Horrors of Andersonville: Life & Death Inside a Civil War Prison

Andersonville existed only for the last 14 months of the Civil War and conditions there were horrific! The prison was designed to house 10,000 prisoners, but held 32,000 at one point! Food was scarce and medical supplies practically nonexistent. Almost 1/3 of the prisoners died. At the end of the war, the prison's commandant, Captain Henry Wirz, was tried and hanged.

Why I picked it up: I have read few things about the Civil War and this looked interesting...but awful at the same time!

Why I finished it: I wanted to see who survived and how some of the issues would be resolved. Even though the events described were almost unbelievable, I was astounded at the human spirit's determination to survive.

I'd give it to: Anyone interested in the Civil War.

Making rounds with Oscar: the extrordinary gift of an ordinary cat

Oscar is a cat that resides at Steere House, a nursing home where many of the residents have Alzheimer's. Oscar could be characterized as not necessarily liking most humans. He doesn't spend much time with anyone...until their last few hours. It seems that Oscar has the ability to sense when a resident is about to die and then proceeds to stand vigil with them.

Why I picked it up: Sister Faith recommended it to me.

Why I finished it: I really got involved with the staff at Steere House, the residents and, of course, Oscar.

I'd give it to: Anyone with aging parents. Anyone who loves a good cat story.

This is a collection representing the thousands of letters received by Jacqueline Kennedy following the assassination of President Kennedy. They are touching, some in their eloquence and some in their simplicity. Interspersed with the letters is some explanation of the events surrounding the assassination and of the lives of the Kennedys.

Why I picked it up: I was in grade school when President Kennedy was killed and I still remember where I was when I heard the news. And I always admired Jackie Kennedy for her grace.

Why I finished it: I found the history particularly interesting as I had forgotten some of the details of that time.

I'd give it to: Anyone who likes history.

Mount Everest & Mountain Climbing Display

We have added a new display to the cube in the library. Books on mountain climbing and Mount Everest are being showcased due in part to an article in Outside Magazine’s April issue about 13 year old Jordan Romero of California. This May, Jordan will be attempting to become the youngest person to summit Mt. Everest. Not without controversy of course as people ask “How young is too young?” and “Is this expecting too much?”

There is another record breaking attempt being made this year by Apa Sherpa, a Nepalese mountaineer. He will be trying for a record 20th summit. The summit isn’t his only goal as he is leading the Eco Everest Expedition (2010). According to the website Asian-Trekking .com:

“Our focus will be on climbing in an eco-sensitive manner, bringing old garbage, in addition to our own, and all human waste produced on the mountain down to base camp for proper disposal.”

Two years ago the Eco-Everest Expedition climbing crew removed 143 pounds of human waste and more than 2,000 pounds of garbage from above Base Camp. Last year it hauled down 252 pounds of human waste and more than 12,000 pounds of garbage, including the wreckage of an Italian Army helicopter that crashed between Camp 1 and Camp II in 1973. Fun book to read...

How to be a Cowboy by Jim Arndt is a compendium of knowledge and insight, wit and wisdom, an all around resource for every aspect of cowboy life.

Martin Brady in his bookreview from BookPage states, "It's the rich color camerawork that really compels, and Arndt's classy shots of elaborately designed boots, shirts, blue jeans and hats, plus peripheral cowboy gear, are enough to make a guy chuck the 9-to-5 and head out to the wild, wild West."

Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran

On January 31, 2009, Roxana Saberi, an Iranian-American journalist who had been working in Iran for six years, was picked up by intelligence agents and eventually was held in Iran's Evin Prison. At times she was held in solitary confinement, interrogated by the agents and eventually sentenced to eight years in prison. For weeks her family and friends did not know her whereabouts. She was released on May 11, 2009. Her trial made international headlines, but was especially covered here in North Dakota, because she was born in New Jersey and raised in Fargo, North Dakota. In this book, Saberi recounts her months of confinement.

Why I picked it up: Because this was in the news on a daily basis, I was curious to read Roxana's version of the events.

Why I finished it: It's an easy read and I wanted to know what she had to do to be released from prison.

I'd give it to: Anyone who wants to read about a North Dakotan who survived a harrowing experience.

I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced

Nujood Ali is from Yemen and was married at the age of 10. Her father arranged for her marriage to a man three times her age. After she is abused both physically and sexually, she manages to escape and make it to the "court" where she seeks a divorce. She is the first child bride to be granted a divorce in Yeman and was named a Glamour Woman of the Year in 2008.

Why I picked it up: I was intrigued by both the title and the picture of this beautiful, young girl on the cover.

Why I finished it: It is an easy read and I wanted to know if she lives "happily ever after."

I'd give it to: Those who read biographies and enjoy reading about other cultures.

Even though she has grown up in England, she is a Muslim and believes she understands the way of life she is about to encounter. She encounters great frustration...and great satisfaction.

Why I picked it up: I needed a biography for the Reading Challenge that Stoxen Library sponsored this past summer.

Why I finished it: It was interesting to read about a different way of life. Some of it was frustrating in terms of the treatment of women. It was most educational to read about another culture.

I'd give it to: Anyone who likes biographies...and/or enjoys learning about other places in the world.

On Monday, Feb. 22 at 7:00 pm, Dr. David Solheim will lead a book discussion featuring Diane Glancy's Asylum in the Grasslands. This event will take place at the Common Grounds Coffee Bar in the Library. You need not have read the book to join the discussion. Asylum in the Grasslands is Glancy's most recent book of poetry where she "explores the history of loss" of the Cherokee community. Glancy is a Cherokee poet, fiction writer, essayist, playwright and screenwriter.

A variety of Diane Hall Glancy's books are on display in the Library and are available for check out.

Diane Glancy will be the next author for the Heart River Writer's Circle and will be speaking on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 pm at Beck Auditorium. She also will be a guest speaker during the Women's Voices luncheon on Wednesday, March 3.

Stoxen Library recently had a visit from Captain Jack Sparrow

He is bringing awareness to an interesting topic: Pirates

Whether you’d like to read about Buccaneers of the 1600s or modern day pirates attacking ships off the coast of Africa, we have the books for you!

In John Matthews’ Pirates, you will find many unique extras including an example of a recruitment advertisement from 1779 and a Little Book of Pirate Slang so you can work on your pirate speak.

Learn what to do if you come across a Swashbuckler as you go about your day in What If You Met a Pirate written and illustrated by Jan Adkins.

Go back to the seventeenth century in Buccaneers of the Caribbean by Jon Latimer and Daniel Sekulich will provide insight into the high seas piracy currently going on in the world in his book Terror on the Seas.

If these titles interest you please stop into the library and check them out. While Captain Jack did have to continue on his journey, if you have questions, the Library Staff is always here to assist you in whatever treasure hunting you’re doing.

New database feature - Medline Plus Full Text!

MEDLINE is the premier database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It provides indexing of articles in biomedicine, health and the life sciences. According to the National Library of Medicine website it is designed to provide information for health professionals, biomedical practitioners, researchers and educators. The database generally covers materials from 1949 to the present.

Our new Medline Plus Full Text database includes citations from Medline to more than 4800 current biomedical journals. It also provides the complete full text dating back to 1965 to 1470 of those journals including the current issue.

Summer Reading Challenge

Well, the results are in...we had nineteen people participate in the "summer reading challenge." We asked participants to choose from a list of genres and pick ten outside of their normal comfort zone. Marie Hetzel won the prize for most pages read (9511) and Noel Wax, Holly Leftridge, Lisa Dolechek and Cindy Thronburg won prizes for reading from ALL of the genres. Other prize winners were Deborah Ford, Carolyn Burns and Diane Melbye. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

This resource provides information about the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military and transnational issues for 266 world entities. Guidelines for the summer reading challenge!

Basic challenge guidelines:
· Choose ten different genres to sample. You may choose from those on the sheet in the packets or pick something we haven’t thought of. Just be sure to choose ten different types of literature.
· Read a minimum of 15 pages of each genre. (But you can go for 600 pages if you like!) This can be easily fulfilled with any combination you like of essays, short stories or magazine articles or you can certainly read an entire book if you choose.
· If you choose to include your favorite genre, try a different author. Your choice must be in some way new to you.
· You do not have to choose materials from the library collection. Friends or the public library are also great places to find something new.
· Stoxen library staff will also be putting up regularly changing displays featuring materials of the different genre types on the enclosed list.
· Keep track of your reading on the reading log from the packet.
· Turn in your log by August 14th to be eligible for prize drawings.
· Special prize for the one who reads the most pages!

In addition to the drawings, all challenge participants, who turn in their reading log by August 14th will receive:
· A complimentary beverage certificate to the Common Grounds Coffee Bar
· Your own personal read poster (see the end of our book stacks for samples featuring our students and staff)

Advanced challenge: There will be a special prize drawing for anyone who would choose to try all of the genres on the enclosed list!

Murder in the Library!

Stop by the library and sign up for another "Murder in the Library" happening THIS FRIDAY, April 17, 2009, from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. Join the library staff for some treats, crime solving, and prizes as we wrap up National Library Week! We have a maximum of sixty spaces available for this event.

There will once again be a murderer and a victim! We will again be joined by our own "Dr. Watson" as teams compete to see who will be the first to follow their clues and discover who did the dastardly deed. Teams will consist of six members. You can put together your own team or just come and sign up and we will add you to a team that needs additional members. Pictures from last year's event can be viewed in the sidebar.

Rules of the competition are as follows:

1. Each team must work together as one unit (you may NOT break up into smaller units in order to complete the tasks).
2. Choose a captain to speak for your team.
3. Each team will receive their first clue after you have entered the library.
4. If you have a question about a clue, there will be library staff roving on both levels. Ask one of them, but do not go to one of the station workers to ask for help.
5. If you leave the library before the event is over, you will NOT be let back into the library.
6. If one team finds another team’s clue, do NOT disturb it. You will be disqualified for this action.
7. When you have all of your clues and know who the murderer is, your captain will present the clues and the name to the judges at the reference desk.

Prizes are awarded to the top three teams and everyone receives something for participating so we hope you will join us on Friday.

My name is Keri Youngstrand and my title is Library Associate. Basically, my duties include helping with Interlibrary Loan and processing new books as well as various other tasks. I started in this position on January 2, 2009, which makes me the newest. I have an English degree from Jamestown College with a minor in music. Prior to beginning this position, I worked as an Assistant Cashier at Dakota Western Bank in Bowman, ND. I live on a farmstead north-east of Amidon with my husband, Jason, and our two children, Trent and Logan. We have ten cows, four horses, a dog, and more jackrabbits than I can count. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, crocheting, singing, and spending time with my boys. I am the Sunday School Superintendent at Lebanon Lutheran in Amidon and a member of the Slope County Fairboard. Recently, I have learned to play the guitar and begun teaching piano again.

My turn: I am Renee Newton, the Office Manager and Circulation Supervisor at Stoxen Library. I’ve been in my position since September but as a DSU student I worked here and it’s great to be back! When not working, I spend time taking care of my family and trying to squeeze in as much reading (am enjoying the Twilight series right now) and knitting (dishcloths are the current obsession) as possible – if only I didn’t need to sleep!

NetLibrary is once again offering us an additional free ebook for February. To celebrate African-American History month, Raising Freedom's Child: Black Children and Visions of the Future After Slavery is free until February 28. According to their website:

Stoxen Library, Women’s Voices and the Campus Activities Board are sponsoring a showing of Iron Jawed Angels on Monday, Jan. 26th at 7 p.m. in Beck Auditorium. If you are not familiar with it, this is an HBO produced movie dealing with the early women’s suffrage movement and particularly an incident in which a group of women picketing the White House asking for the vote were imprisoned for obstructing sidewalk traffic.

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.The women were jailed for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women. Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

I am Rita Ennen and privileged to be the Director of Library Services. I came to DSU in 2001 as Technical Services Librarian. I still love Dickinson and serving students at DSU. In addition to general management, I also handle all of the library's magazine and journal subscriptions, assist with collection development of audiovisual materials, and serve as systems librarian for Aleph (our integrated library system software). I am currently serving as local arrangements chair for the next North Dakota Library Association conference to be held in Dickinson Sept. 27-29, 2009.

When I'm not working I enjoy music and drama events with/for my children. (Next play at the high school is Ramshackle Inn a comedy/mystery Feb. 27 - Mar. 1.) I enjoy reading (sci fi is favorite!), playing piano for worship at my church and camping and gardening in the summer time.

Technical Services Librarian

I am S. Faith Wanner; my title is the “Technical Services Librarian.” Does that mean I am a technician for the library computers? That’s not the case. What makes my library position technical? Providing access to library resources is a complex process; it requires knowledge of bibliographic and data control. I am responsible for the jobs that pertain to resource management, including acquiring, cataloging, processing, accessing, maintaining holdings of library resources, and account management. I also coordinate interlibrary loan services and assist the other librarians in providing reference and public service to the community.

I’m starting my seventh year at Dickinson State. Previous to that, I worked in various K-12 schools in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. I have a Masters in Library Science (MLS) for grades K-12 from Spalding University in Louisville, KY. In December 2007, I completed a MLS with an emphasis in academic/university libraries from the University of North Texas, Denton, TX.

When not working, my hobbies are quilting, reading, and spending time with family and friends. I enjoy watching HGTV, the Food Network, CSI, and science fiction.

Becky Needham

My name is Becky Needham and I am a library assistant/evening supervisor. The assistant part of my job title means I help with various tasks such as interlibrary loans, reserve items and my favorite part, helping to process all of the new materials the library receives. My evening supervisor duties involve watching over the library and all that takes place in it on Sundays and Monday thru Thursday nights. I have a degree in geology from UND and I taught my first geology lab last semester and will be teaching another one this semester.

Outside of work I enjoy the outdoors with my husband, Brock and our dog Radar. I like to take pictures with my digital camera, but by no means consider myself a photographer. Brock and I also like to hang out with our friends and play the game Rock Band.

We thought it might be time to introduce ourselves to all of you. Some of the library staff members have been here awhile...and we have a couple of new folk. So we are going to use the blog to tell you a little about ourselves.

I am Eileen Kopren, Public Services Librarian. What does a Public Services Librarian do, you ask? My primary responsibilities include library instruction, supervision of all circulation activities including student employees and reference work. This is my 34th year at Stoxen Library...and, yes, I do love my job! During my time here, the library has evolved and changed in numerous ways.

I am a DSU grad and proud of it! I have a Masters in Library Science from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

Outside of my job responsibilities I enjoy walking and reading (what else would you expect a librarian to say!). I also sing in a church choir and play in a handbell choir.

Library now open 7 days a week!

Beginning this Saturday, Sept. 6, the library will be open 7 days of the week! Regular library hours will be:
Monday – Thursday – 8 am – 11 pm
Friday – 8 am – 5 pm
Saturday – 2 pm – 5 pm
Sunday – 4 pm – 11 pm

Please note the library is also now open until 5 on Fridays (versus 4:30 pm).

Library hours vary over University breaks and holidays.

We moved this summer!

We haven’t actually moved the library, but we did spend time this summer re-arranging the books and periodicals so we thought we would let you know where some of your favorite items may now be located.

First of all, we evaluated books in the reference collection and moved some of them to the open book stacks. That means you can now check out, for example, such resources as the Dictionary of the Middle Ages, the Folklore of American Holidays, the Encyclopedia of Human Emotions and the Encyclopedia of Sports Science. For those of you that require students to use reference books, you might want to double-check the stacks to see what remains. There are still plenty of resources there.

We also moved the oversize books from the north end of the balcony down to the main floor at the beginning of the reference shelving. There are some real treasures in this collection, so check it out.

We then shifted (and vacuumed) every other book in the library. For most books this means they moved several sections from where they were. I know there are some who will need to “re-learn” the location of your favorite section. Believe me when I say that I’m still in the process of relearning where those frequently used sources are…I feel your pain!

We now have a “new” collection in the library called the Curriculum Library. These are textbooks and curriculum guides used in the elementary and secondary schools. You will find these materials on the lower level of the library in the compact shelving.
